I spent this week with the wonderful folks down at the Australian People for Young People facilitating a Voice and Accents workshop for Years 7 - 9 students. Young actors came from across NSW to participate in the workshop that was part of ATYP's summer holiday program.
Together we explored vocal technique, confidence and range, as well as basic accent training. With this knowledge the young actors could dive further into character building and vocal characterisation. They enjoyed learning about how changes in the voice can change how the audience relates to certain characters. The students worked in groups on an accent of their choice and later performed short scenes and skits to each other in their chosen accent. We had dialects from North America, Britain, Germany, France and New Zealand.
I'm looking forward to working with the young actors at ATYP again soon!
